It is not easy to guide people into the train of thought that we want to share with them. Some background information may be of help. For this reason images of projects and experiments that Demotech has done, can be accessed from this page.
Clickable links from the descriptions that come with the pictures lead to more info on this subject.
Let us know with your comment if this approach is of help.
This is the old cow-barn with thatch roof, that had been transferred into an efficient and well equipped workshop for development and demonstration of Demotech's design initiatives.

Hanna Henning, a Dutch woman lives in Senegal and is involved in a project to improve life in the rural settng. She intends to continue her work in a new t o be registrated foundation. Can we develop the next stage superheater? It should develop into next to no cost. It should not polute air, therefore use no chimney. It should have a 100 % efficiency. It should become a highly appriciated element of modern living.
Follow the developmenttowards these targets.

Precautions against the effects of often recurring floods need to be taken at a collective as well as at household level. Such measures should be within the reach of the local community, where governmental care is not to be expected.
The ideas, here presented give a general idea how they can be realized: a raised food storage, an emergency raft, safe access to water at one's yard and a raised pump platform.

3D-grafics picture a first approach for making modular roof elements.
For pictures of a first test see First test beam structure
This design incorporates 3 basic ideas:
-Double layer roof, to prevent heat from the top roof sheets radiate downwards
-Top layer is from smaller size roof sheets, giving the option to use left-over parts from roofing
-The roof module has a strong wooden member that links up with the modules which it is aligned.

The Student Workforce has organized a workshop directed at creating understanding for the aspect of 'making' and self-reliance in poor rural conditions. This series of picures will give an impression of how this workshop 'worked'.

All over the world, with intervals of a few month, conferences are organized on development themes such as water. At this "UN Year of Sanitation" it was the dirty fact that 2 billion people simply do not hava a proper place for defeacation. This fact has not escaped attention of the development incrowd and many plans are made to tackle it. Such plans have to be discussed again and again, at this World Water Week Conference in Stockholm (17-14/08/2008) one topic was why all these plans fail. Demotech brought in the Hy2U-hand washing campaign. No failure this time?

RopePump, 3D Grafic Half real, half schematic design
To bring together some design ideas on the RopePump that emerged in Indonesia in 1981 and Ghana in 1989,
this grafic 3D-representation is made. It will be shown together with some pictures made in the same period.

The base for the SolarBathroomBox is a stable square cement pot. Making it from cement allows to give it the most functional form. Production can be done small scale in a way well known in shanty towns. Local capacity and local need for proper sanitation comes together this way.

Niceness is the central theme in the Hy2U-Campaign. That seems contradictory: Hy2U is SMS-language for Hygiene to you. This is why: the campaign looks for positive inputs, therefore 'Niceness'. We advocate a thing that is used many times daily for comfort (and yes, also for the sake of hygiene), so it is close by, often made available at a prominent place, be it at home or at school. So the 'thing' should first of all look nice, better beautiful.

The Hy2U-Campaing targets the need for good care of hygiene for these kid's hands?
The number of hands that need proper care is huge, is a billion hands a good guess? The World Health Organization seems to think so.
Citing one of their studies: According to WHO, 1.8 million children die every year from diarrhoeal diseases and 90% of those are aged less than five years, mainly in developing countries. The study's findings suggest that half of those lives could be saved.

The Hy2U for washing hands without piped water
Washing your hands, Hy(gene)-2-You, the niceness of it and the underlying importance for health made Demotech launch the Hy2U-campaign for hand washing. This campaing walks on tho legs: one is the design for no-cost abd no-touch hand washing where there is no piped water. The other leg is a peer to peer spread of the introduction and the use of the Hy2U.
Main source of information on the Hy2U is its website. More this index page.

The Innovation of the HyBoX for school hygiene
The bigger part of primary schools in Ethiopia had no piped water to be used for washing hands. At all levels it is know that this causes sickness, school absenteeism and death as infection can easily spread. Dangerous are diarrhea and cholera.
The Hy2U fulfill all that is needed, but is not sturdy enough for unsupervised use.
This picture story is about the innovation of the HyBoX and the first model that was made in Nairobi in December 2019 by a local carpenter that was instructed by Demotech's designer

It is ust one week that we could work here in a small agricutural village to introduce our new design for a rope pump. Basic target is to get the cost that much down and the functioning of this water pump that much better that farmers will feel it as a must to make one for themselves or to buy a locally made pump without even thinking of getting a subsidy for this.
More reporting on this project will follow.
