Rope Pump Manual 1990 by menbers of the National Servce Secretariat

Demotech's last visit to Ghana was 1989. In cooperation with the team of the National Service Secretariat and the priest Niek Pronk of the SMA, work started on a rope pump for a 45 meter deep bore hole, not used up to that time. This bore hole was in the small village of Ogokrum, cared for by Niek Pronk. A third part of the inhabitants suffered from the Guinney-worm disease, crippling and killing many of them. Clean water would be a blessing.
Demotech had prior experience with the construction of a rope pump on a deep bore hole. In 1984 we constructed a rope pump on a 50 meter deep bore hole at the Bandung University, Java, Indonesia. However many construction details were altered for the application in Ogukrum.
Later Demotech received a copy of a manual describing the construction of this rope pump. The A4-pages are reduced in size and only just recognizable. The text on the pages is copied to the text field.
Many of the details described in this presentation -though of our own design- are not more endorsed by Demotech. However the total setup of this pump remains of interest. For the first time the drive wheel was placed next to- but not above the well. This drive wheel was housed between sturdy walls masoned from concrete blocks. Special attention was paid to make local upkeep workable. Women were engaged in the most important aspects of construction and upkeep. Also see 'Appropriate for Woman".

Large Pulley Production

  1. Old lorry tire
  2. Cut neatly sides of tire. The running surface is discarded. The inner diameter of the sides of the tire is copied on to the wooden boards (see 3)
  3. Trammel for marking out on two 1 inch thick boards marked A and B. The outer circle has a 10 cm larger diameter than the rim of the tire.
  4. The sides of the tire are nailed or bolted against the wooden disk. The composing parts A and B are clamped together with two battens. In the center of the disk two V-shaped notches are cut out. The remaining square shape correspondence with the square shaped end of the wooden axle. The large pulley is driven and guided by this axle. For this reason the axle must be made of excellent quality wood and fit tightly into the square hole in the large pulley.
  5. The wooden axle is made of good quality wood and between 2 and 3 inch in diameter (5 cm to 7,5 cm).
  6. Large pulley ready. The handle to turn the wheel is attached to the wooden disk, between 5 and 6 inches (25 to 30 cm) from the center. A smaller or larger size makes pumping less comfortable.
