Research on Eco-sanitation

Mail from Daniel Thylmann to Jaakko about Eco-sanitation
In July 2008 Jaakko asked the opinion of a friend of his on the value of the Hy2U. This happened in the course of the preparations for the Stockholm World Water Week and the support from the Maastricht University that Jaakko tried to get at that time. An expert's opinion was very welcome, specially because of the many links provided.

Dear Jaakko,

Unfortunately there is not many information about technical details available on the hy2u- website. That makes it difficult for me to asses any advantages or disadvantages compared to other designs. Aspects that might especially determining the advantage of your design could be self-closing (prevent contamination and evaporation) and the refill frequency.

Available material and no-cost are aspects featured by other designs as well. Generally, I would state that the most important aspect is promotion/ education. It is good if you have an appropriate technique available, but in the end it is all about getting people to use it. As far as I have heard that works quite well for you, so maybe you can stress the point of promotion concepts in your presentation, as this is an field of expertise of demotech.

Peter Morgan has worked a lot on the issue of ecological sanitation and has develop really easy to apply designs. Attached you find pages 217-219 from his compilation, giving examples for simple handwashing devices. The whole document (might be interesting for the demotech-people working on sanitation issues) is availible on

http://www.ecosanres.org/PM_Report.htm

I can send you some general information about hygienic issues from the “WHO guidelines on the safe use of wastewater in agriculture” later, but that is probably only marginally related to your subject.

A first brief review of WHO documents led me to this document, which might be useful for assessing the impact (and it is really up to date):

Then I checked in the ECOSAN-newsgroup for information about handwashing. They have posted this link, which I consider useful, as a good general introduction is provided together with some examples for designs including explanations.

Another approach can be found on this website, but it does not appear very convincing:

The last one is not really related to your approach, but it looks funny and is actually an interesting design:

Well, that's all from me for now... if you see any ecosan-people running around there on this conference say hello for me ;-)

Best

DAN
