Conceptual Approach / Calculations

This calculations refer to experiment 3 where we are building a manure collection vehicle. The calculations below are made to get an idea of the size of the vehicle that will collect the manure.

For example:

When an entrepeneur collects and treats the manure of 1000 people in a slum the following calculations can be made.

  • 1000 people produce 1500 (1,5*1000) liter of urine and 350 (0,35*1000) kg of feces a day.
  • The manure collection vehicle has a capacity of 200 liter of urine and 100 liter of feces.
  • The entrepeneur works (at least) 8 hours a day

With a 200 liter urine vessel the entrepeneur has to make 8 (1500/200 = 7,5) collection rounds. The amount of feces collected at such a round is 350/8 = 43,75 kg.

When the entrepeneur works 8 hours a day every collection round takes 1 hour. In this hour there has to be collected 200 liter of urine and 43,75 kg of feces.

When there is an average of 4 people that uses a BathroomBox the daily amount of manure collected in one BathroomBox is 6 (1,5*4) liter of urine and 1,4 (0,35*4) kg of feces. In this case the entrepeneur has to empty 33,3 (200/6) BathroomBoxes an hour. This is about 2 minutes per Bathroombox.
