Hello Murray,
I don't know if this is what you're talking about, but the military is researching using peizoelectric energy generated from walking (as in troops marching, etc.) to power radios and such. I know I've seen articles on this, but I don't recall where.

Using piezo elements is to my recollection not very beneficial for the environment because of the lead emissions during production.
