Idea on paper Fivefold reduction of cost Applicable within poverty Income Nutricion Rural

Why
Next to no-cost solutions for transport of water in a gutter like fashion from the source (pump) to the place of use (plant) should also solve the problem of potential theft of PE-pipe or water hose otherwise used. A basic system should be easily adapted to the amount of water needed.
This is a wild idea to try to solve the problem of cost when water pumped up with the rope pump should be distributed properly to the plants. A gutter of bigger capacity is needed when water to drive a hydraulic ram pump has to be channeled from some point in a stream to the place where there is sufficient drop in level to allow a hydram to function.
Both applications still have to be tried out. Demotech looks forward to any useful idea to get water transport done this way or an other next to cost-free way. Please use the forum page below!

How
Narrow strips of sheet plastic are folded double to form a gutter. A tunnel like shape is made by bringing the sides together. At short distances the edge is pierced with wire or rope. With a wire or rope the strip is hung from an overhead cable. Tension applied lengthwise to the plastic strip gives the gutter form stability.
As the overhead cable will bend in a curve under the load of the water and the gutter should run almost horizontal, the length of the wire or rope between cable and strip has to be easily adjusted during set-up and later for adjustment and repair. This adjustment may have to be done some meters above one's reach. A practical way of doing this has to be worked on.

  • Bucket drip irrigation system
    bucket drip irrigation
The bucket system consists of two drip lines, each 15-30 m long, and a 20-litre bucket for holding water. Each of the drip lines is connected to a filter to remove any particles that may clog the drip nozzles. The bucket is supported on a bucket stand, with the bottom of the bucket at least 1 m above the planting surface. One bucket system requires 2-4 buckets of water per day and can irrigate 100-200 plants with a spacing of 30 cm between the rows. For crops such as onions or carrots, the number of plants can be as many as the bed can accommodate. A bucket system currently costs about KSh 900 (US$ 15). A farmer growing for the market can usually recover this investment within the first crop season.
